Drama Curriculum Intent

Curriculum Map

Year 7

Students will be introduced to basic Drama Skills and begin to develop simple character.

In Year 7, students will be focussing on Physical Action, Body Awareness, and Nonverbal communication. Students will develop empathy towards a character and their situation through  basic scripts and stimuli, developing improvisation and devising skills. Students will begin to develop their  analysing and evaluation skills and suggesting basic improvements to improve a performance. In Year 7, students are introduced to a variety of plays and scripts and encouraged to learn the social and historical contexts of key texts, such as Shakespeare’s As You Like It, War Poetry and The DIary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank.  The study of a Shakespearean text in full is tied in with the English curriculum and our performance in the Shakespeare Schools Festival. The core skills of vocals, movement and drama conventions/techniques are the focus for this foundation year.

Year 7 Curriculum Overview - Drama

Year 8

Students will continue to develop performance skills selecting appropriate vocals and movement skills to a greater extent. Controlling use of pitch, tone, volume and emphasis and build on their use of vocals and movement from Year 7.

Improvisation/rehearsal techniques will be developed exploring atmosphere through control of pause, vocals and movement and basic lighting and sound effects. Students will deepen their exploration of text.  Analysing scripts – background research, understanding contexts and themes within the piece. Students will develop character motivation with the use of basic Stanislavski technique to create a believable character. Students will gain an understanding of style and genre and recognise the key features in a drama performance. Evaluation and analysis will be explored to a greater depth in preparation for the written element of the course. The aim of Year 8 is to give pupils a sound foundation to begin their GCSE course in Year 9.

Year 8 Curriculum Overview - Drama

Year 9

Students will continue to develop and masters performance skills selecting the appropriate vocals and movement skills in their portrayal of character. Continuing to control their use of pitch, tone, volume and emphasis and movement skills. Students will be given the opportunity to develop their appreciation of drama as actors and developing a wide range of key skills throughout their study through carefully selected texts.

Students will investigate a practitioner or genre of drama, work collaboratively to develop ideas to communicate meaning and experiment with dramatic conventions, forms and techniques to produce and realise a piece of original theatre. They will also have the opportunity to participate in the performance of an extract from a play text. Students will demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of drama, including their ability to interpret texts for performance.

Evaluation and analysis will be explored to a greater depth in preparation for the written exam and students will be given the opportunity to go and see live theatre.

Year 9 Curriculum Overview - Drama

Year 10 GCSE
