Year 11 GCSE

Students will be studying BTEC Music through the exam board OCR. 60% of their three year course is made up of four practical elements, where the students have to complete two performances, one solo and one group and two compositions. These pieces of coursework will be built upon throughout the three year course. Students will learn how to practise their instrument effectively alongside having a one to one instrumental lesson with a professional peripatetic instrumental teacher weekly. There will be a cost for these lessons.40% of their course is based on a final listening exam in year 11. This listening exam is made up of four areas of study; AO2 Classical Concerto through time, AOS3 Rhythms of the world, AOS4 Film music and AOS5 Conventions of Pop. Within these areas of study there are multiple styles of music from around the world that the students will have to listen to. There is a vast amount of vocabulary that will be embedded into their lessons. There is an expectation that every student needs to listen to each area of students for 20 minutes each day to get them used to listening and recognising elements of music in each style. Students will need to be able to identify instruments, texture, tempo, dynamics, melody, pitch, tonality and be able to read and notate music. The three year course is based on a theory of repetition. Each year, students will revisit the same styles of music, however they will delve into more detail each time they look at each genre.
