Home Learning

At Aureus, we believe homework is an essential part of learning. Homework develops study habits and independent learning. Research shows that homework also benefits factual knowledge, self-discipline, attitudes to learning, problem-solving skills and time management. We want to encourage our students to become independent learners and be able to self-regulate their own learning. If Homework is effective, it can lead to accelerated progress and research has shown a significant impact on secondary school students.

Parents and Carers can become the guardians of their child’s Google Classroom and receive summaries of work set and submitted and ongoing deadlines. If you require any assistance with Google Classroom, please contact your child’s coach in the first instance.

Nature
The nature of Home learning will vary between subjects, year groups and topics. The most effective tasks are those which are frequent, short and focussed and knowledge which is integral to lessons for example, we use recall checks at the beginning of every lesson. Some home learning may be embedding memory recall to support revision.

Frequency
Each Subject will set Home learning, designed by their own department to best suit their curriculum at each Key Stage. For frequency of each subject’s Home learning please refer to our guidelines below.

Duration
Home Learning duration guidance:

Key Stage Length of task
Subjects that see their students 2-3 times a week for KS4 1 hour per piece
Subjects that see their students 2-3 times a week for KS3 Up to 1 hour per piece
Music, Dance, Drama, Arts and PE Project work over a small half term or 30 mins a week per piece

Setting Home learning
Home learning will be set via Google Classroom as an assignment or a quiz. It is the responsibility of the student to click ‘Hand in,’ even if the work does not require a document being uploaded on Google Classroom and will be checked in the lesson.

We want to encourage students to continue to use our Knowledge Organisers provided on the school website to support memory recall. If students do not have access to internet at home, please ask your teachers to provide hard copies of work for Home learning or students can access Google classroom during the school day at break times.
